Resources & Activities

Westerly Village & The Village Common (TVC)

Westerly Village was launched in 2021 to provide direct one-on-one services to a member and group services generally available to all members. Individual services include transportation, technology assistance, help with homecare and more. Group services include access to social programs and connections for our members, special local events, get-togethers and other social activities that are organized, planned and facilitated with the help of our volunteers, members or both. As such, our village serves as a central, one-stop resource for services and activities available to all members. Those planned activities will be announced via email or phone to our members and volunteers, and by calendar postings.

TVC maintains a master calendar of TVC-wide activities offered by each of its local villages, including ours. TVC also publishes a monthly newsletter that highlights various resources and activities. Both are accessible by clicking on TVC’s website or by headings at the top of these webpages. To access TVC’s master calendar, click on Calendars. For access to TVC’s newsletter, click on Newsletter Archive. You can then click on any monthly newsletter for the past few years; you can also sign up there to join the mailing list.

Westerly Area

Westerly was named an “age-friendly community” by AARP in the summer of 2021. Age-Friendly Westerly was launched to partner with other local organizations to help create opportunities to age gracefully here. They maintain a directory of services for older adults. They also have created a short video series featuring some familiar people from Westerly discussing issues of importance to older residents (e.g., staying mentally and physically healthy, avoiding scams, preventing falls). Each can be accessed by clicking on the Age-Friendly Westerly link below.

The Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce maintains a monthly calendar of arts, cultural and entertainment events in the greater Westerly area. Examples range from restaurant weeks, to bird watching, to sensory friendly hikes for adults. Click on the Chamber’s calendar link below.

Two of the area’s venerable treasures are our Westerly Library and Wilcox Park. The library opened in 1894 on donated adjacent land that now is our beautiful Wilcox Park. All library services are free to the public. The adult services are extensive and can be accessed by clicking on the Library link below. They include calendars of upcoming events for adults, connections to online and local resources for older adults, and an extraordinary array of direct services (e.g., computer and WiFi access, homebound delivery and outreach, help with computers and taxes, and local history and genealogy). To receive the library’s monthly emailed newsletter, click on E-newsletter signup under About Us on the Library link below. And if you want a library card to borrow from the enormous collections from Westerly and statewide, just click on Check It Out.

The stated mission of the Westerly Senior Citizens Center is to “provide opportunity for the ‘young at heart’ to meet and enjoy a wide variety of social, educational, health, and recreational programs, and to promote the positive aspects of aging to them, their families, and the community at large.” Membership (dues at $25 per year) is expected, but not required, for some services and activities. Services include a very low-cost daily meal on site, limited transportation, support groups, health clinics and special programs (e.g., health insurance, safe driving courses and tax assistance). Group recreational activities (some with nominal fees) include games, arts and crafts, social activities, educational opportunities and exercise. Details on these and a monthly newsletter (with monthly calendar) are accessible on the Senior Center link below.

 Statewide

The agencies of Rhode Island state government’s Executive Office of Health & Human Services (EOHHS) offer programs and services generally for adults and specifically for elders (aged 65 and over). EOHHS services for adults include dental care, healthcare programs, transportation services and finding housing. EOHHS services for elders are intended to “help meet their needs, maintain their independence and improve the quality of their lives.” They include helping with healthcare or dental care, locating adult day services, paying for food or finding healthy meals, getting to medical appointments, affording Medicare or prescriptions, protecting or caring for oneself, and applying for supplementary income or long-term services and supports. For details on general adult services or specific elder services, click on the EOHHS link below.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Rhode Island (URI) is part of a national network and started at URI in 2009. OLLI at URI offers an intellectually stimulating array of courses and lectures specifically tailored for its members (age 50 and older) in current events, history and government, humanities, and recreation and wellness. It also offers special interest groups organized and attended by members for fun and socialization (e.g., book groups, walking in South County trails, discussing world affairs). Most courses and lectures are at the Kingston campus (some via zoom) and are open only to members. Special interest groups meet wherever the organizers arrange. Membership dues are $65 per year. There are some fees for a course, but none for participating in any special group. Member benefits also include free parking at the Kingston campus and discounts for course books and URI performances. Click on the OLLI at URI link below for a list of current courses and special interest groups.
