The Village Common of Rhode Island
2025 Impact Report

A MESSAGE FROM OUR
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

TVCRI Impact Report Word Cloud 2I am proud to share the 2025 Impact Report for The Village Common of Rhode Island (TVCRI). Over the past decade, what began as a grassroots effort to support aging in place has grown into a proven, volunteer-powered statewide network. Today, our villages provide practical, cost-effective support that reduces isolation, strengthens well-being, and enables older adults to remain in their homes and communities longer.

This year’s theme, "The Power of Community", reflects what we witness every day: when neighbors support neighbors, lives are strengthened. A volunteer ride to a medical appointment ensures access to essential care. A shared meal or friendly call alleviates loneliness. A local gathering fosters connection and purpose. These moments may seem inconsequential, but collectively they create measurable impact—improving quality of life while helping to delay or prevent more costly interventions.

A thriving village is not simply a collection of services. It is a scalable, community-based solution to one of the most pressing challenges facing our state: how to support a growing aging population with dignity, sustainability, and care. Our model leverages the dedication of trained and vetted volunteers, maximizing resources while fostering authentic human connection. It is both compassionate and practical—an approach that strengthens individuals while reinforcing the social fabric of our communities.

Over the past year, we have expanded into new communities, deepened partnerships, and increased engagement across our network. This growth reflects rising demand and increasing confidence in our model and services. As more Rhode Islanders seek alternatives to isolation and institutional care, our villages provide a trusted pathway for aging well at home.

None of this progress is possible without the generosity of donors and volunteers who believe in the power of community-based solutions. Your support is not simply funding programs—it is sustaining independence, strengthening neighborhoods, and investing in a future where aging in place is accessible to all.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to innovation, collaboration, and measurable impact. With continued partnership, we will deepen our reach, expand our network, and ensure that every older adult in Rhode Island has the opportunity to age with purpose, connection, and dignity.

Together—with volunteers, members, partners, and generous supporters—we are building a stronger, more connected Rhode Island where growing older is not defined by limitation, but by possibility.

~ Caroline Dillon

ps: The word cloud above captures how our members and volunteers describe their experience with The Village Common of Rhode Island: kind, supportive, welcoming, belonging. These words reflect more than sentiment—they represent a model of community-based support that is helping older adults across Rhode Island live safely, independently, and with dignity.

OUR VISION & MISSION

We envision a time in Rhode Island when all older adults can thrive and live independently and safely in our communities.

10 Years of the Village Movement in Rhode Island

This year, we proudly celebrate a significant milestone: a decade since the founding of The Village Common of Rhode Island and the beginning of the village movement in our state. What started as a grassroots effort to promote aging in place has grown into a dynamic statewide network of villages united by a common goal—to ensure that older adults, supported by hundreds of trained and vetted volunteers, can live with independence, connection, and fulfillment.

Over the past ten years, TVCRI has broadened its reach, strengthened partnerships, and refined its programs to respond to the evolving needs of our members. We have developed a neighbor-led, volunteer-powered model grounded in respect and shared responsibility. From our early beginnings in Providence to the thriving villages now serving communities across Rhode Island, our progress has been fueled by individuals who believe in the promise of aging well—together.

As we commemorate this 10-year anniversary, we honor the founders who envisioned this movement, the volunteers who give generously of their time, and the members whose lives and stories inspire our work. This milestone represents not only how far we’ve come, but also the opportunities that lie ahead. With continued collaboration, innovation, and compassion, we eagerly anticipate the next decade of expanding our reach and deepening our impact.

Growth

Our steady growth demonstrates the lasting importance and vitality of TVCRI’s mission. We welcomed 4 new villages in 2025— Bristol-Warren, Cumberland, Jamestown, and Warwick. Each new village enhances our statewide network and brings us closer to achieving our vision.

In 2025, access to a village community increased from 24% to 41% for RI 65+ residents.

At TVCRI, growth is about more than numbers. It is reflected in the relationships formed, the shared moments that bring neighbors together, and the deepening sense of belonging within and among our villages. The measurable success of our programs, the expansion of our geographic footprint, and the increasing number of dedicated volunteers and members all demonstrate that we are responding to a vital and growing need.

As we continue to expand, our commitment remains clear: to foster a more positive and empowering experience of aging—grounded in dignity, mutual support, and community connection. The true strength of our villages lies in the people who sustain them, and it is their shared dedication that continues to shape a more connected future for aging at home.

The Power of Community
AN IMPRESSIVE YEAR OF CELEBRATION, GROWTH AND COMMUNITY BUILDING

TVCRI’s members engage in a variety of ways, including attending social events, participating in educational activities, taking on leadership roles, and helping to plan activities. Through this engagement, members actively shape the direction and growth of their local villages, ensuring that the support provided by volunteers reflects their real needs. This culture of “members helping members” strengthens community bonds and fosters an environment where everyone feels welcome, appreciated, and valued.

Meaningful connections between members and volunteers are at the heart of this work. Members consistently describe their interactions with volunteers as friendly, reliable, and supportive. One member shared, “Every time I receive a ride, I have felt supported, and it has indeed improved my life. All the volunteers have been thoughtful and kind.” Volunteers express similar appreciation for these relationships. As one volunteer noted, “I enjoy the connection to community members and being able to provide assistance to those who are in need. Making a difference in someone’s life provides a sense of purpose and peace to me.”

These shared experiences demonstrate The Power of Community and that the impact of TVCRI’s services extends beyond the support provided—it lies in the authentic relationships that are formed. Members’ enthusiasm, positivity, and gratitude contribute to a strong sense of community and inspire others to engage, helping to build TVCRI’s reputation through word-of-mouth.

OUR SOURCES OF FUNDING IN 2025

Our revenue stems from three main sources: grants, donations, and dues. We hosted our second annual fundraiser in 2025 to celebrate our 10 year anniversary.

The following pie chart illustrates the breakdown of revenue sources. TVCRI relies heavily on grant funding representing 44% of total funding, with membership and donations together providing nearly as much as grants alone.

This next pie chart shows the distribution of total hours contributed by paid staff and volunteers. Volunteer hours make up a remarkable 83% of all time invested, underscoring how deeply our work relies on volunteer commitment and demonstrating the significant economic efficiency that volunteers bring to our mission.

Each Village has its own unique mix of members, volunteers, and donors, and that balance evolves as the Village grows. In some of our more mature Villages, more than 40% of volunteers are also members, reflecting the reciprocal nature of our model: they give help, and they receive help.

OUR FUTURE

The future is full of promise. As our established villages continue to strengthen their connections with members and welcome new volunteers, our collective impact grows even stronger. At the same time, the addition of new villages allows us to serve more communities and reach individuals who need support. From easing isolation and fostering meaningful relationships to providing essential services that help members remain safe and independent at home, TVCRI is making a meaningful difference every day.

By collaborating with municipalities and nonprofit partners, engaging local and statewide media, and building relationships through the many events and activities we host, we have broadened our reach, connecting both those who need services and those who are able to provide them.

Looking ahead, we remain committed to building on this momentum. We will continue to support our current network of villages, welcome new communities into our village family, and pursue partnerships that align with our mission and benefit our members. Our goal remains clear: a Rhode Island where all older adults can live safely, independently, and with the opportunity to thrive in their own communities.

By collaborating with municipalities and nonprofit partners, engaging local and statewide media, and building relationships through the many events and activities we host, we have broadened our reach, connecting both those who need services and those who are able to provide them. This is the Power of Community in action.

THANK YOU!

We cannot fully capture the depth of our appreciation for everyone who contributes to the success of TVCRI.

Our volunteers are truly the heart of our organization. TVCRI would not be possible without your generosity and dedication. By giving your time and talents so selflessly, you ensure that our members’ needs are met and embody the mission and values that define our work.

We are also deeply grateful to our sponsors and donors. Your ongoing financial support is essential to our success and makes it possible for us to serve our members while helping our villages grow and flourish.

Finally, we thank our members for the trust you place in our volunteers and staff. It is our privilege to support you with services and resources that help you to continue living independently in your homes and communities.
