Isabel Wilkerson won a Pulitzer Prize for her first bestseller, The Warmth of Other Suns, about the Great Migration of African-Americans out of the Jim Crow South.
Her second bestseller, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, explores ways caste systems perpetuate misunderstanding, cruelty, and violence. Although many cultures have used caste to oppress minorities, Wilkerson explores common functions of caste systems in India, the United States, and Nazi Germany.
She writes: “A caste system endures because it is often justified as divine will, originating from sacred text or the presumed laws of nature, reinforced throughout the culture and passed down through generations.” It will run for 7 weeks, starting on Monday, January 16 at 1pm via Zoom.
